Venturers 0-9 Combined 1 (10/5/15)

Team: Han, Sam, Eliza, Mike, Ad, Seve

Players of the match: Eliza

Our final match of the season saw us head out to play Venturers.  This was to be our first meeting with them as they had been unable to field a side for the home match.

Looking at the stats before match, we learned that they needed a win to survive in the top flight, so they would be playing hard!  We also had two of our players having played in the Sheffield mixed open on the same day, so there were some tired Broomgrove legs!

Adam and Mike began the might with a win in two, despite Adam sporting a bit of a hangover following Verity’s birthday celebrations.  Sam and Han were able to follow that up with a win in 3.  The next volley of single sexed games saw Sam/Eliza and Steve/Mike all win in two. 4-0 Broomgrove.

The mixed games were to be closer still, with 4 of the 5 rubbers going to 3 ends! Adam and Sam decided to get their money’s worth by going to 3 in both of their rubbers, clinching both (19 and 16 in the 3rd ends).  Mikey and Hannah played brilliantly to take theirs in 3.  Steve and Eliza won their first one comfortably, and then took their last one to 3!  9-0 Broomgrove.

So in a match where 6 of the 9 went to 3 ends, Broomgrove were able to achieve a clean sheet.  The scoreline in no way reflects how close the match was and the strong performances put up by strong and competitive Venturers side.  If they do go down this season, we wish them all the best in next season’s campaign and a swift return to division 1.

The player of the match could only go to Broomgrove’s newly crowned Sheffield Open Champion: Eliza (who partnered Joe).  To win the tournament and still find the energy to turn out for the team shows commitment that I applaud.  On top of that, she is a fairly reasonable player too 😉

We have retained the division 1 trophy – well done to all in the squad for another successful season.  Who’s up for continuing the Broomgrove Combined dynasty?

Go Broomgrove!
