A first match on home soil for Mens 2 was a perfect chance to bounce back from their opening loss two weeks ago, and bounce back they did against a decent Graves team.
The two Richards, Grainger and Clarkson started off with a simple win at the top of the card (17 & 14), before Max and Harry showed maturity beyond their years by quickly dispatching the opposition 3rd pair (10 & 17). After a lighting start, Jonathan and Andrew let the first game of their opening rubber slip, before eventually fighting back to take it in three (20-22, 21-11, 21-13). 3-0 Broomgrove.
More hard work was required in the next round of matches, with another two rubbers going the full distance. Richard & Richard overcame Graves’ 3rd pair and a number of dubious service fault calls to take their game in three, before Max & Harry sealed the victory for Broomgrove with another easy win (17 & 10), their battling attitude and stamina proving too much for Graves’ 2nd pair. Jonathan and Andrew were taken to three against the opponent’s top pair, but took the match score to 6-0 by claiming the third game.
With the points sealed, it was time to build confidence and game difference going in to the last round of games, the two Richards getting the best result of the day (10 & 12) and Andrew & Jonathan finally getting to put their feet up after two games, taking their last rubber 17 & 12. The first Broomgrove whoopass of the season was in sight but despite more brilliant hard-work and solid play, youngsters Max & Harry found a 3rd set game against the top Graves pair just one game too far, going down 15-21, 21-19, 19-21.
Final score 8-1 Broomgrove, a complete reverse of their last outing and proof that we can be competitive at this level. Next match is Paces 2, fellow promoted team and one of our best chances of more wins…
Player of the match: Max – a second impressive performance in a row and, along with Harry proved they could stand alone as a young pair and keep their heads.
