Abbeydale 2-7 Combined (13/01/13)

Team: Laura, Ada, Sam; Steve, Ad, Joe

Player of the match: Joe

A good match against some of our long standing local rivals.  But a match that we went into full of confidence, with our home result an emphatic 8-1 win.

With Joe and Adam in the starting line up, we won our men’s rubbers without dropping a game.

The ladies rubbers were a different prospect.  Our strong pairings of Laura + Ada and then Sam are a challenge for any opponent.  But the Abbeydale ladies, and particularly the strong Alison, played very well.  The two marathon rubbers both went to 3.  Unfortunately, Broomgrove were to be denied as Abbeydale made the most of their home advantage.

So, let’s call that 2-2 and onto the the mixed rubbers. Laura was keen to get the better of her nemesis, Alison, and made no mistake in her mixed.  Dominating the net and exposing positional frailties in the opposition, we managed to win the rubbers to 11 and 12.  Joe and Sam swept aside their opposition without dropping a game.  Our new pairing of Adam and Ada won their first rubber in two. In their second, they fought valiantly to make it 1-1.  The final game found them 19-17 down.  The heads of mere mortals would have dropped at that point: but not our super pairing!  Four points later saw our victorious pair shaking hands at another clean sweep!

So from 2-2, we ended the match 7-2 winners.  A good result against a competitive and hospitable home side.  We wish them well for the remainder of the season.

Go Broomgrove!
