Broomgrove v Abbeydale 1 – Combined Plastics 25/01/11

Team: Peter, Joe, Gordon, Sally, Jen C, Jacquie.

Despite missing Steve, Adam and Jen A, a fantastic backup team performance resulted in a well-deserved 6-3 win against the formidable Abbeydale combined team.  It was primarily the mixed performances that won the day as Broomgrove won all of their mixed games.

Joe and Peter grinded out a win in their first level doubles game when the avoidance-of-joe tactics of the opposition started to break down.  Unfortunately, things went downhill in the remaining level doubles portion of the match with Peter and Gordon not quite getting the tactics right. Both ladies games were lost as well with the power of the Abbeydale ladies proving a bit too much for the Broomgrove contingent.

However, all was made up for with stellar performances from each of the ladies in their mixed games.  Performance of the evening came via Sally and Peter’s tight three-ender, which they managed to win after a nervy finale, effectively securing the overall victory.  Jacquie dominated the net against the older but very tricky and established Abbeydale pair and was hitting winners for fun against the demoralised final mixed pairing.  All of this was very much appreciated by Gordon who just sat back and waited for the inevitable mid-court smashes.  Jen C also made things easy for her partner Joe, where they chalked up relatively comfortable wins in both their mixed games, making it 3/3 for the tall one.

Overall, a great performance against a traditionally tricky side.  One to be proud of!
