This was an eagerly anticipated match of first versus third. There was a slight sense of apprehension in the Broomgrove camp as their talismanic skipper was unavailable. It was therefore with great relief that we welcomed back John to partner Gerry in a formidable pairing.
Mark and Jason following there recent stirling work were deservedly promoted to number one pairing. They carried the plan through perfectly immediately losing to the strong Gosforth first pair. This lured the Gosforth team into a false sense of security leaving the path clear for both John and Gerry and Raj and Peter to blast through their first-up opposition with storming starts. Mark and Jason recovered in their second game after losing the first end to take a convincing 21 -11 win in the third.
This left the score at 4 – 2 to Broomgrove going into the final decisive round of games. Mark and Jason now buoyed by their last win convincingly took their final game to secure the match victory for Broomgrove.
Raj and Peter put the icing on the cake, drubbing the Gosforth first pair who were forced to magnanimously accept a sporting defeat.
In the final dead rubber John produced an entertaining display of exhibition badminton. The number of variations on the overhead drop slice was simply staggering. His virtuoso performance garnered the plaudits of the assembled supporters but unfortunately drew a blank on the scoreboard .
Thus the final result was a keenly fought 6 – 3 win to Broomgrove.
Raj and Peter: Won 3: score +24
Mark and Jason: Won 2: score +4
John and Gerry: Won 1: score +6
